My oldest daughter has high functioning Autism. This photo symbolizes that even though she has challenges in certain areas (gross motor, social communication, and self- regulation) with adaptations and planning ahead, she has demonstrated that she can accomplish anything. Here she is riding her bike for the first time. We had a bad experience with it at first, so we took some time off. We worked on building up her muscle strength in her legs by using a balance bike and tricycle. We had a family friend introduce her bike to her and practice with her. When she told us about it, we praise her and make it a big deal. My daughter is an example of Universal Design of Learning in my daily life. She inspires me to be creative and come up with different ways to allow her to access and learn common things her typical peers achieve much easier. In the process, her younger sister learns much quicker too. |
